ARE YOU READY TO 'LEARN THE RULES LIKE A PRO SO YOU CAN BREAK 'EM LIKE AN ARTIST'?
Let's face it, Pablo Picasso knows
what's up.

Have you daydreamed about achieving perfect penmanship? Or have you fallen down several Instagram rabbit holes and watched hours and hours of brush pen lettering and calligraphy videos, WISHING you could do that too? Or is it time to reclaim the pen licence you lost after graduating from school and abandoning the written word in favour of texting and typing?

Look, maybe you're simply in search of a hobby that is just for YOU. Something that doesn't require infinity $$ of sports equipment, or a degree, or 8 years of experience. Something that involves creativity and lets you escape from the daily grind. Something where results can be achieved QUICKLY, and your progress will give you personal satisfaction. An activity that is relaxing, enjoyable - but most of all, fun!

I've been a beginner, pen friend. I've done the hard yards, bought all the wrong supplies, frayed all the pens and experienced all the frustration.

I've spent hours upon hours researching, studying, and practising the art of brush pen lettering - and I am so excited to bring that together into this online course, so that you can get a head start - I wish I could have!

But wait, lemme guess. You have reservations.

WELL CANCEL THEM IMMEDIATELY, and make a new one for 2 people at Restaurant Pen Wizard, cos I'm about to serve you up one course of delicious knowledge. Hope you're hungry.

Ok but for real, let me calm down at least 8% and unpack any hesitations you may have.

My handwriting sucks. I can't learn brush pen lettering.

EEEEEEERRRH. WRONG. Heads up, my handwriting is awful. The great thing is, lettering is a completely different skillset! Handwriting is continuous and cursive, lettering fits into the category of drawing. We are drawing (very simple) shapes, that we then mindfully piece together, to create consistent and beautiful letters. If you have terrible handwriting, join the club! ($19.99 membership p/a I'm the President) It will not affect your ability to learn and nail brush pen lettering.

I'm left handed, I won't be able to do this.

ERRRHHH. Also WRONG. There are a tonne of awesome lefties out there, and I've taught a bunch of 'em too. The technique can be a little different, and lefties are sometimes better with certain pens than righties, but it is 100% achievable.

I'm not creative.

Not true. I used to think the same thing about myself! I thought - well, I can't draw something new and unique from inside my brain, therefore I'm not creative and I suck at art. But think of it this way: you can't go in and perform brain surgery without a bunch of training and education. So why is a craft any different? Creativity and being good at an art form are two different things. You don't have to reinvent the wheel to become good at lettering. The bonus is, the more you surround yourself with creativity and creative people - the more creative you'll become!

I don't have time.

You will need to dedicate time to practise if you want to improve your lettering as quickly as possible, I'm not going to lie. The skill is based around building movements into our muscle memory, so it will require some frequent repetition. The good news is that I've DONE most of the hard yards for you. I've found what supplies work best, I've researched and studied and trialled techniques during workshops to see what works best and quickest, and I know how to get you where you want to be in the shortest time frame possible. Practising requires your attention, but it's definitely something you can do with your favourite TV show playing in the background. So if you have time for that, you have time to learn brush pen lettering. Know what else? You have LIFETIME access to this course, so it'll still be here waiting if you get too busy.

Who is this course for?

  • People with zero experience in brush pen lettering.
  • Pen friends with plenty of experience in brush pen lettering (you learn something new from every teacher!)
  • People looking to learn a new skill from the comfort of their home and no pants.
  • People wanting to explore their creativity and unleash their inner artist.
  • Busy people who need core information packaged up and delivered in an easy-to-follow format.
  • Graphic Designers / other creatives looking to add a new skill to their toolkit.
  • Every day people (in like, a cool way), who don't want all the confusing industry jargon.
  • Open-minded people willing to give and receive constructive feedback in a positive way.
  • Dead-set legends. Obviously.

(Oh yeah, and you probably need a sense of humour too. This is not one of those super serious, straight-faced corporate classes.)

Who this course is NOT for:

  • People wanting to be a pro after 2 weeks. At least gimme 3. But for real, it will take some time AND work.
  • People wanting to become Insta-famous for their lettering. I mean, it's a nice byproduct of sharing your art, but it's not why we're here.
  • Close-minded peeps who aren't open to trying different techniques or accepting constructive feedback. Help me help you.

What you'll need:

  • At least 1 x brush pen (my favourites are Artline Stix Brush Markers which are large, and Pentel Sign Brush Pens which are small)
  • Quality paper (I recommend Rhodia)
  • Printer for the guide sheets and workbook.

That's it!

Since December 2015 I have grown a social media following of over 80,000 by sharing what I know.

I have turned a brand new hobby that I had NO prior experience in, into a full-time business.

Rewind: I actually FOUND a hobby. Before that, the only thing I was good at was eating my weight in m'n'ms and quoting Step Brothers.

I found something I could learn from scratch, improve at quickly with the right guidance, that didn't cost me thousands to get started or require a 3 year degree.

In the last 15 months, I have taught over 350 students in face-to-face workshops, and over 950 students through online classes, and I cannot wait to teach you.

Hey, I'm Emma - and I'm friggin' nuts about calligraphy, lettering and helping people find their inner artist.

In December 2015 I set out to make some mildly offensive greeting cards as my new business venture, Black Chalk Collective. With no idea about Photoshop or Illustrator at the time, I figured I would have to create the designs by hand. Through this discovery process, I uncovered a hidden talent and passion for Brush Pen Lettering. My trial and error lessons were shared on Instagram, and in the space of 18 months my online following grew to over 80,000 pen friends.

These days, my real passion is teaching other fellow creatives that you don't need 8 years of design experience or a degree in visual arts to create beautiful lettering. All you need is patience, dedication and a helping hand (that's me!)

"Just thought I'd drop you a quick line to say how much your lettering course has helped me develop my own style and how much I've learned. What I really appreciate is the way you have broken down every letter into its component parts so that I can see how to actually form and join letters. Brilliant strategy and very accessible."
- Mira B

"I've been practicing strokes and drills, and I LOVE the way you break down the letters. All of a sudden I GET IT! Great class. Thanks much Emma!"
- Laura K

"You are a wonderful teacher. I felt intimidated to try brush calligraphy, but now I'm feeling motivated!"
- Mel M
